Linux! When this word comes into our mind, some kind of black or white background is seen with green or single colored text continuously moving all around. It was developed by Linus Torvalds and the name was derived from his name.  But, Linux is one of the things that have more of misconceptions spread than the right things, even though it has become a whole new world of Operating systems. So in today’s article we will discuss about some of the biggest misconceptions about Linux.

·         It is only for Nerds
The First misconception about Linux is only for nerds. It is not exactly so. Though it provides the best of tools for developers and engineers, but also have features for others. Some of the most favorite Linux versions are Fedora, RedHat and OpenSuse which are more inclined towards the use of command line tools and have best of features using which we can develop software and other programs. But, at the same time Operating Systems like Ubuntu, Linux Mint are more a like a kind of replacement of Windows in Linux kernel. Linux mint is designed to look similar to the older versions of Windows (Work may be going on to look like newer versions) so that anyone shifting from Windows to Linux don’t have any problem. At the same time children’s Operating System are also available, some of them are doudou Linux , Qimo 4 Kids and Edubuntu.

·         Linux is an operating System
One bigger misconception about Linux is that it is an operating System, which is not so. Instead it is a kernel which forms the core of the Operating System that is developed or used and on it features and GUI is developed to form a complete operating System. So Linux is a Kernel but Linux Mint developed on Linux is the actual Operating System.
·         Linux is derived  from Unix
Unix is one of the best open source kernel developed during the early phases of advanced computers. It was similar to the command line interface of the windows. But saying that Linux was derived from Unix is not correct. Linux was the name derived from its developer Linus Torvalds and not from Unix.  However, it may be said that Linux was developed after an inspiration from Unix. Thus, Unix and Linux are different things and both exists separately.

·         Linux is 100% secure
Any operating system’s security can be found with the technique with which it interacts with other components. Moreover, hackers would develop techniques to bypass security of only those software which are used by masses.  These are the two reasons which have made Linux safer and securer than any other operating system. Again, if you are a Linux user you know that for any change in the system, whether it is installing a software or modifying it, adding a user or modifying it, all these needs root access. These security features have made it more secure but still some issues are present. There have been incidents where Linux has been cracked but they are not too much published because very few people bother about it. Thus, it is secure but 100%? No.

·         Linux is not supported on all hardware
This is not true. Though it was true years ago in the initial phases of the kernel or Operating Systems, today it can be installed on any computer you want. It has support for all of them. You may need to install some of the drivers to support all features, once you do that it would never ask you anything else. Even if there are issues with some printers and scanners it is always fixable. Even you can also write drivers for your own PC.

·         You have to say bye to windows
Again this one is just a misconception. You may know that most of the Linux operating systems run on any computer and becomes the host operating System on it. You can run Windows in dual boot mode, through windows loader you can use Windows too. Even you may know that some operating systems like Linux Mint and Ubuntu have features like install in windows. This means you don’t need to make Linux as your host operating system. For even better functions you have Live CD, which can be used by just inserting and running the CD when you need it. After use remove the CD and it will destroy all instances of the operating system.

So here we see that most of the misconception were may be true for the past, in today’s world of Linux all these thinking is a misconception. So no need to fear about Linux, just try it, you will love it. If you love the article, just share it to your friends. If you have some suggestions or queries, please use our comment box.
